Our History

Founded in 1982

Smith/Packett was founded in 1982 by James R. “Jim” Smith as a development and Certificate of Need consulting firm. By 1986, Mr. Smith had formed various partnerships and developed nursing homes throughout Virginia, Florida and the Carolinas. These partnerships grew to include senior housing communities, active adult communities, independent living, assisted living, nursing homes, medical/office buildings, and mixed use facilities and grew geographically to be throughout the United States east of the Mississippi. 

Our Story

Smith/Packett has developed or acquired more than 150 long-term and senior housing facilities throughout the Southeast. These properties have an aggregate value in excess of $1.5 billion, making Smith/Packett one of the largest and most prolific firms in the industry.

Mr. Smith in addition to founding Smith/Packett has also formed Harmony Senior Services, one of the fastest growing operators of Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care senior communities in the country. Additionally, he has created Wessex Capital Investments, a nationally recognized private equity firm whose core expertise is value creation through investments in opportunistic acquisitions and new construction of senior housing and commercial real estate. As Mr. Smith says, “together these three companies form the three legs of the stool uniquely positioning each company with a competitive advantage”.

In the past 5 years alone, we have developed more than 27 senior living facilities, valued at over $960M with each community uniquely sized according to its market need.
